Sunday Salon, June 5

What is the cat looking at? She sat in front of the rock wall for hours just like this,
Weather: Hot. We are experiencing record-breaking heat. It should be over 90 degrees today. Not good.

End of the school year blues: This is the time in the library which feels a little like a slow moving tornado is coming. We know it is on its way and we can't avoid it. The textbooks are starting to trickle in, many needing to be repaired or boxed up for surplus.  We ask (read - beg) teachers to take care of their books early so we don't have to deal with their end of the year stuff while we are near crazed with student items, but they ignore us. Seniors are starting to swirl around as they finally start thinking about lost books and unpaid fines. In the meantime, Sharon and I are trying to keep up on the daily stuff so we are ready for the onslaught. At times it feel like "hurry up to wait."

Reading surprises: Usually this time of year I am too exhausted to read much and definitely am not interested in blogging much. But so far this year I am keeping up with reading and have found a renewed interest in writing reviews for books I'm reading (I still haven't handled the past due book reviews, but one step at a time.)

Books read this week:
  • Highly Illogical Behavior by John Corey Whaley---a YA, potential Printz contender about a boy who is agoraphobic and the girl who wants to "cure" him so she can use the experience for an essay to get into college. At first I was pretty irritated by the book but it grew on me as I read on.
Currently reading:
  • Circling the Sun by Paul McClain---an upcoming book club selection about Beryl Markham, a remarkable woman who lived in Kenya the same time as Karen Blixen (Out of Africa author.) I am getting pretty obsessed with this book and the setting/time period. 80% done.
  • The Lie Tree by Frances Hardinge---YA. Another Printz contender. This one is the only YA book which has earned a starred review by every publication reviewing it.

  1. If you weren't wild about Highly Illogical then I will strike it from my list. Life's too short.

    1. But, like I said, the book grew on me so I eventually liked it, even though it isn't a favorite book by any chance.

  2. We're about to get hit with a tornado the next couple of weeks at our library too with our annual summer book sale. At least this year I didn't have to organize the volunteers with the local Friends of the Library group doing that and we have Scouts helping to bring up the books. Good luck, though, with your (slow) tornado. :)

    1. I just watched OUT OF AFRICA again last night and plan to read it some time soon. I did the same thing with her first book, The Paris Wife. I became obsessed with Hemingway.

  5. That cat looks positively GHOSTLY! lol

I am still considering Circling the Sun, as I loved The Paris Wife...and another memoir about the author's childhood.

Thanks for visiting my blog, and enjoy your week.

    1. I was obsessed with The Paris Wife and got into Hemingway after reading it. Now I am obsessed with Circling the Sun and want to read Markham's own book, West With the Wind, and read Out of Africa by Karen Blixon who was a contemporary of Markham.

  6. Love the cat pictures! I am so behind on reviews myself. And I'm finding that it is hard to do more than one review a day. It's like I have trouble getting into more than one book at a time for reviews. I really want to get caught up though so that I'm not doing that again, and it gets back to how it used to be. Thanks for visiting my Sunday Post earlier!

    1. I know. Isn't the cat funny. She was not taking her eyes off the rocks for nothing.

  7. I hope you are keeping cool. And I hope the temperatures go down some soon. Sounds like work is very busy for you right now with so much going on. Hopefully it will go smoothly--or at least close enough to it--and you'll see the end soon. At least until next time. :-)

The Lie Tree looks like it would be a good one. I hope you are enjoying it as well as Circling the Sun.

    Have a great week, Anne!

  8. Sounds like a crazy time of year for you! Here, too - my son graduated this weekend!

I've wanted to read Circling the Sun - glad to hear it is living up to its hype. Should be good for book group.

Way to go on the reviews - I have a lot of catching up to do!

Enjoy your books this week -
